Up in the Air: Air Pollution & Conflict
Published in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, this study examines how Harmattan-driven Saharan dust affects social conflict across 16 West African countries. Using satellite-derived PM2.5 data, geocoded conflict events, and an instrumental variable strategy, it finds that severe dust pollution reduces overall conflict by constraining mobility and social interaction, while increasing resource-related conflict.
